Community

There are hundreds of shops on the site and I for one would love to see more of them participating in the forum, the rings for promotion and the site in general.  There is so much to offer here that if you are not participating fully, you will miss the fun and the true meaning of this site, to support handmade.  That is what this community is about, supporting handmade no matter who and no matter what the handmade product is, we support it and this is a true community in that sense.  We support everyone, not just one or two, but everyone and everyone needs to become a member of this community in the true sense of the word.

Are you an artist or a businessperson?

Are you an artist or a businessperson?

Writen by Larissa of Reef Botanicals
If creating isn’t just a hobby for you, if you actually have a shop and items listed for sale, your answer to that question should be simply “yes,” because you should be both.
handamade sunshine cardLook, it’s a risk putting your creations -yourself – out there for others to judge. It really is asking for judgment, after all. You hope someone besides you likes what you make, likes it enough to actually spend money on it.  You may wonder if you’re nuts, if you really have anything to offer.  Saying to yourself, “I have a skill, and it’s a marketable skill, and I create things other people want,” takes guts.  It takes confidence that others will judge you favorably.  So kudos for getting that far.  But that’s not the end of it.
You also need to be a real shop.  You can’t just snap a couple photos and throw stuff up online for sale.  You need good photos and good descriptions, but that’s been addressed in other posts on this blog and I won’t be addressing it here.  I merely mention it to remind you.  Today I’m talking about what else it takes to be a real shop.

Finding Inspiration for Combining the New Colors in your Craft

Ever since I posted the Pantone Fall 2013 color palette, I’ve heard from readers saying they are having difficulty combining the colors in their work. I have a 3 word solution to that dilemma. “Take a Walk”.
Just glancing at the color swatches, it does look like an odd group to combine and coordinate but if you take that palette outside, you see those colors working together naturally.  Yes, it’s spring, not fall, but these hues are combined in nature all over the place.

Featured Artist Melina of MMGems

Featured Artist Melina of MMGems

Wire Wrapped Copper EarringsArtists are not selling materials, artists are selling ideas and offering emotions. What an amazing statement from an artist that works from the heart!
Melina is a woman that has worked with her hands her entire life. As the youngest child in the family in Bosnia and Herzegovina, she was a third hand for everyone (which every artist knows comes in handy!) and was always being asked to hold this, get this, finish this, start this.  This amazing beginning fostered a creative spirit that is not just a job for Melina, but a way of life.  Her grandfather’s advice was “going to school is important, but never forget to learn at least one skill.”  Melina has taken this to heart.

Tamera is a loving mother of two teenage boys that sees life through an artist’s eyes. She is married to her High School sweetheart…..awe! And is often surrounded by a large and loving family. She credits her strong Christian beliefs with keeping this family together through anything.  They love their life in Oregon; well all except camping, which Tamara admits is not her favorite family activity but goes along anyways.

Why Is Handmade Better?

Why Is Handmade Better?

handmade jewelryWritten By iKnitQuiltSew
We all believe, or have had someone tell us, that handmade is better the manufactured. But why is that? Is handmade really better or is it an illusion or a myth?

What is “Handmade?”

For the purpose of this article, I’m defining handmade as something that is NOT made in a factory setting. Handmade is an item in

handmade doll

which the artisan has a piece of themselves invested.
Regardless of the method used to create the item, handmade is something which was created at the hand of the person who had the original idea.

All about QUARTZ

QUARTZ

Natural Quart
Posted by Rasmussen Gems and Jewelry LLC
Quartz is a very common mineral in the earth’s crust (second to feldspar in abundance), and comes in a variety of colors. Seen here is a cluster of quartz crystals. Quartz is silicon dioxide (SiO2) and is the primary mineral in sand.  Quartz has a hardness of seven on the Mohs scale which makes it a good gemstone for all styles of jewelry.  In addition, quartz comes in a wide variety of colors.  This months’ blog will be devoted to the faceted varieties.
Amethyst GemstoneAmethyst is the highest valued form of quartz.  Amethyst is purple and the color is produced by the presence of iron in the crystal.  In ancient times an amulet of amethyst was thought to prevent drunkenness.  Some amethysts will pale in sunlight.

Happy Mother's Day plus a Giveaway!

Happy Mother’s Day plus a Giveaway!

Well it is that time again to honor the mother in your life. Maybe your biological mother or if you’re like me you may adopt a mom here and there. Since the passing of my mother in 2003 and even before her passing I’ve adopted special women in my life as pseudo mothers and they have always been a blessing to me. These women that have entered my life at various moments have been available at just the right time when I’ve needed the hard won experience of a strong women figure, someone to bounce life decisions off of, or just to chat.
So what are you doing this year to honor you mother, or mother figure in your life. Gifts are wonderful but so is a hug or a dinner. Take the time to honor these people and show your appreciation for the gifts they have given you with their experience.
Celtic-Visions-BraceletOur friend Rebeca from Blue Buddha Boutique was kind enough to sponsor a giveaway with us for mothers day. She has offered a Celtic Visions kit complete with rings and color pdf instructions . It is a great way to get your feet wet with a new weave or try chainmaille for the first time.
